OVERVIEW

This is an iPod-guided walk along the critical 1.2-mile section of the Big Dig known by the contractors as “The Missing Link.” Starting at the World Trade Center, you walk over this critical section of the project, using your iPod like a spyglass to see the historical evolution, underground structures, and building techniques that made the Big Dig one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in U.S. history.

Tour Length: 30 minutes

Start Point: World Trade Center Stop on the Silver Line

Recommended times:  Before 10pm (parking garage roof stop closes then).

Formats:  iPod Video, desktop computer viewing.

FEATURING

Peter Vanderwarker, narration/photography
Peter Vanderwarker is a Boston-born photographer, who has been taking pictures of the Big Dig for 20 years. He is the author of the book “The Big Dig:  Reshaping an American City.” He is the author of numerous books and photo exhibitions about compelling places and histories.  

Mike Bertoulin, narration
Was the milestone manager on this section of the Big Dig and responsible for finding innovative ways to keep the project on its timeline.  For 12 years he worked through many of the innovative solutions the various contractors came up with to connect highway 90 to the Ted Williams Tunnel.  Mike is currently the director of structural engineering at Parsons Brinckerhoff.
 
Michael Epstein, narration/production
Michael Epstein is CEO of Untravel Media, a Boston-based media company that develops walkable media for mobile devices.  Untravel is the result of work he did at MIT and in Venice, Italy developing narrative strategies and software for cell phones.  
 
John O’Sullivan, production
John is a freelance video producer who collaborates with Untravel on various projects, including the NEAQ Insider.
